    Hello,

I have my files set up so they have a main category and subcategory.
When I log into the client portal, it is possible to filter by the sub category but not the main category.
Why is this and can this be changed. I’d like to filter by the main category AND subcategory.

So that when a client logs in they can see all files available to them in the main category e.g. reports
And then, if they want, they can click on the subcategory to filter down.

    Please help!

    Thanks,
    Pete

    Hi,

I’m not sure I understand what you mean.
Let’s illustrate that by some examples :

    Let’s say you have
    – Category A
    — Subcategory A1

if your user creates a file and assigns it from the frontend to Subcategory A1, is the problem that when you click on the category widget link Category A, the user content will not be shown? I mean, are you reporting that browsing a category does not always include content from subcategories?
If yes, I would say that this is a WP behavior. Some people might sometimes want to include some content to be shown into a subcategory, but not into the parent category.

    Regards.

    Thanks Thomas.

    I attached a screen shot.

We have files assigned to users via Smart Groups.
Each file is assigned to 2 categories – 1 is the main category e.g. Studies and the second is a subcategory e.g. User Interface.

When the user logs into their client account they are able to filter by the subcategory but they cannot see all files associated with the main category e.g. see all Studies.

    Hi Thomas,

    Responding to this

” I mean, are you reporting that browsing a category does not always include content from subcategories?
If yes, I would say that this is a WP behavior. Some people might sometimes want to include some content to be shown into a subcategory, but not into the parent category.”

Yes, that is what I am saying. I would like the files to be visible in the parent category and also be able to filter these by subcategory

    Hi,

In WordPress, by default, selecting a subcategory will not automatically select the parent category.

You have to select both of them.

However, I admit that you actually can’t do that from the frontend by the box in a single dropdown selection box.
In this case, I recommend you to create flat categories, without nested levels. You could for instance create them as follow :
    – Studies: User Interface
    – Studies: Work In Progress
    – Practice
    – Events

I’ve created an issue (that you can follow) to switch the category selection box to something allowing a multiple selection.

    Regards.
