    how would it be possible to add new custom register fields and based on that, assign the new user to a certain group?

    Hi,

    You can add new custom register fields with ACF and our ACF Integration add-on (or you can even code your meta fields yourself if you prefer to). Then, you’ll just need to use the “custom fields criteria” mode, and use your meta ID there, as shown in the below screenshot:
